Calcium-based solid mixed metal stabilizers are used in many PVC flexible applications like: wire and cables, calendered films (LVT flooring, wall coverings, pool liners); extruded profiles; injection molded, extruded hoses and plastisols (flooring, wall covering, artificial leather, coated fabrics, toys).

Solid mixed metal stabilizer systems are based on Ba, Zn, Ca, or Mg carboxylates. In general solid mixed metals like Ba-Zn, Ca-Zn and Mg-Zn require the addition of co-stabilizers, antioxidants and lubricants to provide optimum performance. The costabilizers are usually imparted to the mixed metal stabilizer system. To adjust the color hold and rheology different carboxylate ratios are used.

Solid Ba/Zn stabilizers and Ca/Zn stabilizers have successfully replaced tin-based stabilizers in many PVC semi-rigid and rigid applications (pipe, rigid LVT flooring). The stabilizers are formulated to meet specific requirements such as good initial color, long-term stability, good transparency, good printability, weatherability, aging resistance, good compatibility with all types of PVC, with fillers, and pigments. A good stabilizer achieves the best possible compromise of all the necessary requirements, including cost.

VOC Improvements

In recent years, different technologies have been introduced to the industry to improve VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) in flexible articles, particularly in relation to the building and construction industry. Low VOC and low odor are the key characteristics required by the industry and reductions in VOC’s can be achieved using Ca/Zn solids rather than liquid based stabilizer systems. The available stabilizers are suitable for all kind of PVC applications: transparent, filled, pigmented, technical and food contact.
